AM Tuning Step

AM tuning step is the frequency increment used when moving between tuning positions on a medium-wave radio tuner.

Steps are stated in kilohertz (kHz). A tuner may offer 1, 5, 9 or 10 kHz steps, while continuous analog tuning has no fixed increment. Multiple listed steps describe available choices.

AM Tuning Step — Tuner

Choose a step that reaches the station frequencies used where you listen. A switchable 9/10 kHz setting lets the tuner follow different channel grids; the wrong setting can leave stations between its tuning positions. Check the regional version and the documented switching method.

Compare the available steps separately from the tuning range, which describes the band's limits. Smaller increments offer finer positioning, but do not by themselves improve noise or separate overlapping stations. Continuous tuning likewise says nothing about reception quality. An FM step does not describe AM operation.
