Analog Cassette Playback

Analog cassette playback indicates that a Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) machine can also play conventional analog compact cassettes.

This backward compatibility lets a DCC machine play an existing cassette collection alongside its digital tapes. The recording on an analog cassette remains analog; the machine's digital format does not change what is stored on it.

Analog Cassette Playback — Digital Tape Recorder

Check the supported analog tape types and noise-reduction playback settings before comparing machines. Those settings matter when playing tapes recorded with noise reduction, because playback must match the recording method. The DCC machine's digital playback figures do not describe its analog cassette performance.

A yes confirms playback compatibility, not the ability to record onto analog cassettes. Nor does it establish a facility to copy them to digital tape. This specification concerns DCC: DAT and other digital tape formats use different media, so their digital recording capability does not imply compact-cassette playback.
