Auto-Reverse
Auto reverse lets a compatible tape machine play the reverse direction without manually turning over the tape.
The transport changes direction and selects the appropriate tracks. Playback reversal does not by itself establish that recording is available in both directions.
Auto-Reverse — Reel-to-Reel
On a reel-to-reel machine, auto reverse can play the tracks intended for the opposite tape direction without exchanging the reels manually. The recording’s track arrangement must be compatible with the machine.
Compare reverse playback support with track format and recording-direction support. Not every open-reel recording contains a reverse programme, and automatic reversal does not convert an incompatible track format. Check the machine’s switching method and selected mode before relying on unattended playback.
Auto-Reverse — Tape Deck
On a cassette deck, auto reverse allows the second side to play while the cassette remains in place. Depending on the available modes, the machine may play both sides once or continue alternating between them.
Compare the supported playback and recording directions separately. Automatic reversal is a convenience feature, not the same as automatically rewinding to the beginning. Check the selected reverse mode when you want playback to stop after one side rather than continue.
