Auto-Reverse Mechanism
The mechanism a tape machine uses to continue playback in the other direction or on the cassette’s other side automatically.
Auto-reverse reduces the need to turn a cassette or change reel orientation manually between sides. This specification describes how the machine does that. Playback reversal and recording in both directions are separate capabilities, so one does not guarantee the other.
Auto-Reverse Mechanism — Cassette Deck
In a cassette deck, a rotating head turns to read the other side’s tracks, while a fixed four-channel head selects the appropriate tracks without flipping the head. A cassette-flip mechanism instead turns the whole cassette over and keeps the tape travelling through the playback mechanism in the same direction.
These approaches provide similar listening convenience through different mechanics. On twin-well decks, this specification describes the recording well. Check each well’s playback and recording support separately. Auto-reverse alone does not promise automatic head alignment, uninterrupted sound at reversal or better playback quality.
Auto-Reverse Mechanism — Reel-to-Reel
On a reel-to-reel machine, auto-reverse can continue playback in the opposite tape direction without manually exchanging reels. A design with separate forward and reverse heads uses the appropriate playback head for each direction; other designs use a rotating or suitably configured fixed head.
Match the machine’s track format and tape speed to the recording before comparing reverse operation. Auto-reverse does not make every reel playable in both directions. Check whether recording also reverses and how the machine detects the tape end. Cassette-flipping mechanisms do not apply to open reels.
