Bias / EQ Calibration

Bias / EQ Calibration indicates controls that adapt a cassette deck’s recording settings to the tape being used.

Record bias is a high-frequency signal used in magnetic recording; it is not part of the wanted programme. Equalization shapes the recording response. Calibration refines supported settings for the tape rather than merely selecting a basic tape-type position.

Bias / EQ Calibration — Tape Deck

Use the deck’s calibration procedure and the intended blank tape. Available adjustments may be manual or automatic, and not every deck adjusts the same parameters. Settings that suit one tape formulation or batch may not be appropriate for another.

Calibration does not repair worn heads, damaged tape or transport faults. It also does not guarantee that a tape recorded with a particular noise-reduction mode will play correctly with that mode disabled. Keep calibration, tape-type selection and noise-reduction settings distinct when preparing a recording.
