Glossary term

Built-In Network / Filter

A dedicated network, filter or bias-supply module incorporated into a cable assembly.

A built-in network or filter is an additional module within the cable assembly, such as a passive component network, a specified noise-filter module or a battery bias pack. Its presence identifies a construction feature; it does not quantify its effect.

Built-In Network / Filter — RCA Cable

On an RCA interconnect, an added network belongs to the connection between the source’s analogue output and the receiving input. Check the maker’s stated function, any source or load restrictions, and whether the assembly has a specified orientation. The module may also affect available space behind the equipment.

Compare the complete cable’s electrical specifications and connection requirements. A box does not establish how much noise is reduced or whether the result will be audible. A bulky RCA shell, ordinary strain relief or shielding layer is not itself a separate filter module.

Built-In Network / Filter — XLR Cable

On an XLR interconnect, a fitted network or filter forms part of a balanced analogue connection. Check that its intended wiring and operating conditions suit the source and receiving input. The network’s function is separate from the connector’s latch and from the cable’s shielding arrangement.

Compare any published electrical limits for the whole assembly, including relevant loading and length conditions. The presence of a module does not demonstrate greater interference rejection than another balanced cable. A splitter or protective housing should not be mistaken for signal-processing components merely because it resembles a network box.

Built-In Network / Filter — Speaker Cable

On a speaker cable, a network operates within the amplifier-to-loudspeaker connection, while a battery bias pack may serve the insulation rather than power the speaker. These are different arrangements despite sharing this feature field. Check the specified function and any amplifier or speaker matching requirements.

Compare the complete cable’s resistance and other electrical loading alongside the module description. Follow any stated orientation or battery-maintenance instructions. A network is not the loudspeaker’s crossover by default, and its presence does not prove improved sound or remove the need for appropriate cable length and terminations.

Built-In Network / Filter — Power Cable

On a mains power cable, a dedicated filter module is intended to act on unwanted electrical interference in the power connection. Check the maker’s description of the filtering function and the complete assembly’s voltage and current ratings. A module can add bulk that affects placement near a wall or equipment rack.

Compare the stated filtering conditions and electrical suitability for the connected component. The feature alone does not establish surge protection, voltage regulation or power regeneration. A decorative cylinder or strain relief is not a filter, and a filter does not replace protective earthing.
