SFP Module Slot

SFP module-slot count states how many cages accept compatible pluggable transceiver modules.

A slot is the host connection for a module, not necessarily an installed optical transceiver. Module inclusion, supported types and link speed are separate details.

SFP Module Slot — SFP Ethernet Cable

On an optical Ethernet assembly or converter, an SFP cage allows a compatible module to provide the required optical connection. The module determines important link properties such as fibre type, wavelength and supported reach.

Compare the host’s supported module types and rates before selecting a transceiver. A physically fitting module is not automatically supported by the device, and an empty slot does not include an optical link. Keep slot count separate from LC connector count because those connectors belong to the installed module.
