S/PDIF Cable Connector / Termination

S/PDIF Cable Termination identifies the plugs fitted to a digital audio cable, such as RCA, BNC, TOSLINK or mini-TOSLINK.

RCA and BNC terminations are associated with electrical connections; TOSLINK forms are optical. Both ends must match the intended source and receiver interfaces. A connector name describes the endpoint, separately from the formats and rates supported by the equipment.

Check signal direction and the function of each socket. An RCA socket may be analogue audio, and an optical socket may support another protocol. Similar appearance is not proof that the two devices can communicate over S/PDIF.

A mixed electrical-to-optical path needs conversion, not merely a differently shaped cable end. For compatible electrical formats, verify the required impedance as well as fit. The termination does not specify data-rate capability, allowable length or an audible quality ranking. Compare the complete source-cable-receiver link rather than selecting a cable solely by connector finish or branding.
