XLR Connectors

XLR Connector Pairing identifies the male and female connector arrangement on an XLR interconnect.

A conventional balanced analogue interconnect commonly uses three-pin XLR connectors. Male and female describe the contact arrangement, not audio quality. Check both ends, pin count and wiring rather than relying on the general XLR name or the shape of the outer shell.

XLR Connectors — XLR Cable

Connect the cable between the intended output and input, following the equipment’s contact assignments. A mechanically matching connector does not establish a suitable signal level or even the same signal format. XLR connectors can appear on analogue, digital and headphone connections with different requirements.

Confirm that the cable is intended for the application and that any latch can be accessed after installation. Avoid pulling on the cable to release a locked connector. The pairing does not specify shielding performance, impedance or noise rejection; those depend on the cable construction and the complete balanced interface, not simply the presence of XLR plugs.
