Cartridge Weight

Cartridge weight is the mass of the phono cartridge, usually given in grams (g). Tracking force is the separate downward force of the stylus on the record.

Check what the figure includes. A cartridge supplied on a headshell weighs more than the cartridge alone. Keep any notes about screws or the stylus guard when comparing weights.

Cartridge Weight — Cartridge

The cartridge must fall within the tonearm’s supported weight range for the specified counterweight and headshell. After changing cartridges, follow the arm’s instructions to rebalance it and set the cartridge maker’s recommended tracking force. Do not set tracking force to the cartridge’s weight.

Weight also affects low-frequency arm/cartridge resonance: the tendency to vibrate at a particular frequency. This depends on the arm’s effective mass—its resistance to being accelerated—and the cartridge suspension’s compliance, or springiness. Cartridge weight alone cannot establish a good mechanical match.
