Cassette Deck Format

The kind of cassette-playing or recording product, such as a home deck, rack-mount deck, combination component or portable unit.

Cassette deck format describes the product’s role and physical arrangement, rather than the tape formulation it accepts. A home component, professional rack unit, CD-and-cassette combination and portable player serve different setups even when they use the same Compact Cassette.

Cassette Deck Format — Cassette Deck

For a cassette deck, use the format to establish how it fits your system. A home deck normally needs external amplification and speakers; a portable unit is designed for use on the move. A CD-and-cassette combination includes both playback mechanisms in one component.

Check recording capability, connections and mounting separately. A portable player may only play tapes, and balanced sockets alone do not establish professional or rack-mount design. Radio-cassette systems, car units, dictation machines and other tape formats are distinct product categories. An accessory or blank cassette is not a deck.
