Category Rating

Ethernet category rating identifies the cabling performance category claimed for the specified cable.

A category describes defined transmission requirements rather than an audio-quality grade. Cable, connectors and the complete installed channel need compatible specifications.

Category Rating — Ethernet Cable

For an Ethernet cable, the category helps match the assembly to the intended network mode and installation. Supported distance and the complete connection arrangement still matter.

Compare the actual category claim and tested assembly, not only a higher number printed in a product title. Shielding and connector type are separate construction details. A higher category does not make a slower network port operate faster or establish better sound in a functioning digital-audio connection.
