Clamping Voltage

Clamping voltage describes the voltage associated with a surge protector’s limiting action under specified test conditions.

A measured clamp voltage depends on the applied surge current and waveform. It should not be confused with the normal operating voltage or a separately stated conduction threshold.

Clamping Voltage — Power Filter

For a power filter with surge protection, this figure characterizes the protection circuit’s response to a transient. It does not describe the regulated voltage continuously supplied to the connected equipment.

Compare clamping figures only with equivalent test current, waveform and connection mode. A lower number under a different test is not a direct performance comparison. Check whether the stated value is a measured clamp level or another threshold; the label alone should not erase that distinction. Keep surge-current capacity separate.
