Coaxial S/PDIF Output

Coaxial S/PDIF output count identifies the electrical digital audio connections provided for downstream equipment.

Coaxial connections use RCA or BNC as specified. Where BNC outputs are listed separately, this count covers RCA only; the same socket should not be counted twice.

Coaxial S/PDIF Output — DAC

On a DAC, this digital output can pass a selected input onward or provide the output of a built-in USB or network conversion function. It remains digital rather than carrying the DAC’s analogue conversion result.

Compare the connector and output format with the receiving input. Analogue RCA sockets and BNC clock outputs are different connections. An optical S/PDIF output does not belong in the coaxial count.

Coaxial S/PDIF Output — CD Transport

On a CD transport, this output sends the disc’s digital audio to an external DAC. The DAC performs the analogue conversion, while the transport provides a supported digital stream.

Compare the connector and output format with the receiving input. Analogue RCA sockets and BNC clock outputs are different connections. An optical S/PDIF output does not belong in the coaxial count.

Coaxial S/PDIF Output — USB Reclocker

On a USB reclocker, this output sends a supported digital audio stream to the next component. Its connection and signal format must match the receiving DAC rather than merely resemble the source-side input.

Compare the connector and output format with the receiving input. Analogue RCA sockets and BNC clock outputs are different connections. An optical S/PDIF output does not belong in the coaxial count.

Coaxial S/PDIF Output — SACD Transport

On an SACD transport, this output feeds a compatible external DAC. Available output formats can depend on the disc or playback mode; SACD playback alone does not guarantee DSD transfer through this connection.

Compare the connector and output format with the receiving input. Analogue RCA sockets and BNC clock outputs are different connections. An optical S/PDIF output does not belong in the coaxial count.

Coaxial S/PDIF Output — Upscaler

On an upscaler, this output carries a supported processed audio stream toward the DAC. The highest rate the processor can generate may exceed the limit of this particular output.

Compare the connector and output format with the receiving input. Analogue RCA sockets and BNC clock outputs are different connections. An optical S/PDIF output does not belong in the coaxial count.

Coaxial S/PDIF Output — Streamer

On a streamer, this output sends supported network or file playback to an external DAC. Its format limits can differ from those of the streamer’s other digital connections.

Compare the connector and output format with the receiving input. Analogue RCA sockets and BNC clock outputs are different connections. An optical S/PDIF output does not belong in the coaxial count.

Coaxial S/PDIF Output — Digital Audio Player

On a portable player, this output lets a compatible external DAC receive digital audio instead of using the player’s analogue headphone path. The output mode and receiving-device support determine the available operation.

Compare the connector and output format with the receiving input. Analogue RCA sockets and BNC clock outputs are different connections. An optical S/PDIF output does not belong in the coaxial count.
