Connector Plating

Connector plating is the surface material applied to the specified connector contacts.

It is distinct from the underlying contact metal, outer housing and signal conductors. A material claim needs to identify which part it describes.

Connector Plating — USB Cable

On a USB cable, plating describes specified electrical contacts at its ends. Power and data still depend on the complete connector and cable design.

Compare the same contact surfaces rather than decorative housing finishes. Plating alone does not establish USB speed, charging capability or support for an audio interface.

Connector Plating — RCA Cable

On an RCA cable, plating describes the finish on specified centre and return contacts. It is separate from the conductor material inside the cable.

Compare the contact specification rather than inferring it from the outer barrel’s colour. Plating alone does not describe shielding, capacitance or whether the cable is suitable for a particular signal connection.

Connector Plating — XLR Cable

On an XLR cable, plating describes the specified connector-contact finish. The signal pins, contacts and outer shell need not use the same materials.

Compare the actual contact surfaces and connector construction. A metal shell is not a plating specification, and a finish alone does not establish balanced wiring or a particular noise-rejection result.
