Glossary term

Construction Material

Construction material identifies the structural material of the specified body, enclosure or platform.

Also called: Body material, Cabinet Material

Different parts of a product can use different materials. A surface finish or decorative veneer does not necessarily identify the underlying structure.

Construction Material — Damping Base

For an isolation base, construction material describes the supporting platform or specified structural parts. The isolation mechanism can use additional materials with a different role.

Compare the actual layer or component being described. Material alone does not establish the working load or isolation performance; those depend on the complete design and loading conditions.

Construction Material — Cartridge

For a cartridge, this field describes the body or housing material. It excludes the cantilever, separate headshell and mounting plate.

Compare the same cartridge part rather than mixing body and cantilever descriptions. A coating or named wood finish should remain distinguishable from the underlying body material; the material alone does not state cartridge output or compliance.

Construction Material — Loudspeaker

For a loudspeaker, construction material describes the cabinet and its baffle. It does not identify the driver cones, grille, stand or decorative surface finish.

Compare the actual structural layers and materials. A wood veneer does not establish a solid-wood cabinet, and a material name alone does not quantify cabinet resonance or acoustic performance.

Construction Material — Subwoofer

For a subwoofer, the material describes the specified cabinet or structural body rather than the woofer cone. Composite cabinets can contain several layers or materials.

Compare the structural part and construction conditions consistently. A surface finish does not necessarily describe the enclosure underneath, and material alone does not establish bass extension or maximum output.

Construction Material — Turntable

For a turntable, this field describes the plinth, chassis or subchassis. Platter, tonearm, armboard, feet and dust-cover materials are separate specifications.

Compare the stated structural materials rather than colour, lacquer or veneer. A sandwich description without named materials does not identify its composition, and plinth material alone does not establish vibration behaviour.

Construction Material — Preamp

For a preamplifier, construction material describes the case, front panel and covers. Internal circuitry, transformer materials, knobs and feet are outside this enclosure description.

Compare the relevant case parts and underlying materials. A finish colour is not a construction material, and an enclosure description does not establish the circuit technology or measured audio performance.
