Current Rating

Current rating is the maximum continuous electrical current a cable or power filter is rated to carry.

It is stated in amperes and applies under the specified operating conditions. It is not a short-duration surge rating or a direct measure of audio output power.

Current Rating — Power Cable

For a power cable, the current rating limits the load that the complete cable assembly is intended to carry. The conductors, connectors and applicable operating conditions all belong to that assembly’s rating.

Compare the rating with the component’s supply requirements and the intended installation. A larger conductor alone does not establish the rating of the finished cable, and matching connector shapes do not confirm adequate current capacity. Use the rating for the actual cable version.

Current Rating — Power Filter

For a power filter, the current rating can limit the combined continuous load of the connected equipment. Individual outlets or groups may also have separate limits within that overall rating.

Compare the total connected load with the unit and outlet-group limits. A rating for the whole filter should not be applied independently to every socket. Keep continuous current distinct from surge-protection specifications and from any brief overload allowance stated separately.
