Form Factor

Digital audio player form factor describes whether a file-playing device is designed for pocket, miniature or transportable use.

Pocket players emphasize carrying and battery operation. Clip or mini players reduce size further. Transportable or desktop-class players are intended for larger setups and may offer dedicated external-power operation. Size is a practical description, not a sound-quality grade.

Compare dimensions, weight, controls and power arrangements with how you intend to use the player. A larger transportable unit may suit a desk but be inconvenient in a pocket. Check battery operation and the actual external-power mode separately; a USB charging socket alone does not describe desktop behaviour.

An Android interface or Wi-Fi does not make a music player a smartphone. Likewise, a MiniDisc or DAT portable uses different media, and an amplifier module sold separately is not a complete player. Retro styling does not determine the format: what the device plays is what matters.
