Glossary term

Depth

Depth is the front-to-back dimension of a component.

Also called: Body length

The stated measurement may include or exclude projecting connectors, knobs or covers. It describes the product’s size, not necessarily the full installation space.

Depth — Power Regenerator

For a power regenerator, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — Music Server

For a music server, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — Subwoofer

For a subwoofer, depth describes the cabinet footprint from front to back.

Check whether grilles or projecting fittings are included. Cabinet depth is separate from the acoustic spacing required from a wall and from clearance for rear connections.

Depth — Crossover

For an active crossover, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — Power Filter

For a power filter, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — Loudspeaker

For a loudspeaker, depth describes the cabinet footprint from front to back.

Check whether grilles or projecting fittings are included. Cabinet depth is separate from the acoustic spacing required from a wall and from clearance for rear connections.

Depth — Upscaler

For a digital upscaler, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — MC Head Amp

For a phono head amp, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — Cartridge

For a cartridge, depth is the front-to-back length of the cartridge body.

Compare body-only figures without the stylus guard, headshell or mounting plate. If the published measurement includes one of these, retain that condition rather than treating it as bare-body length.

Depth — Digital Audio Player

For a portable player, depth describes the front-to-back thickness in the stated dimension order.

Check the published orientation rather than guessing from the order of three numbers. A protective case and inserted cable plugs can increase the carried size.

Depth — Turntable

For a turntable, depth helps determine whether the plinth fits the supporting platform.

Check any cover or tonearm projection separately, including space needed to open the lid. The platter diameter alone does not describe the turntable’s footprint.

Depth — USB Reclocker

For a USB reclocker, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — CD Transport

For a CD transport, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare case depth with shelf space, then allow for rear cables and the disc-loading arrangement. A tray’s open position may need additional space beyond the stated closed-unit dimensions.

Depth — Phono Preamp

For a phono preamplifier, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — Tuner

For a tuner, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — DAC

For a DAC, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — External Clock

For an external clock, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — Preamp

For a preamplifier, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — Power Supply

For an external power supply, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare the stated boundary of the measurement and allow room for connected cables and their bends. A chassis-only depth should not be treated as the complete installed depth.

Depth — SACD Transport

For a SACD transport, depth helps establish the front-to-back space needed on a shelf or other supporting surface.

Compare case depth with shelf space, then allow for rear cables and the disc-loading arrangement. A tray’s open position may need additional space beyond the stated closed-unit dimensions.
