Dielectric / Insulation

Dielectric insulation is the nonconductive material surrounding or separating electrical conductors.

It provides electrical separation and contributes to properties such as capacitance. The material works together with conductor dimensions and spacing rather than determining performance on its own.

Dielectric / Insulation — XLR Cable

For an XLR cable, insulation separates the signal conductors from one another and from other conductive parts. Its properties and conductor spacing contribute to cable capacitance.

Compare the complete electrical and mechanical specification rather than ranking insulation names alone. The outer jacket can use a different material and should not be mistaken for the dielectric around the conductors.

Dielectric / Insulation — RCA Cable

For an RCA cable, the dielectric separates signal and return conductors in the specified arrangement. Material and geometry together affect capacitance.

Compare capacitance at the intended length where source loading matters. A dielectric label alone does not establish the finished cable’s value or guarantee a sound-quality result. Keep it separate from the external jacket.

Dielectric / Insulation — Speaker Cable

For a loudspeaker cable, insulation keeps opposing conductors electrically separate. Its material and spacing contribute to the cable’s overall electrical and handling characteristics.

Compare the finished cable’s rating and relevant electrical measurements. A material name alone does not establish resistance, capacitance or suitability for a particular amplifier. Do not confuse protective outer covering with conductor insulation.

Dielectric / Insulation — USB Cable

For a USB cable, dielectric insulation surrounds electrical conductors and forms part of the data-pair and power-wire construction. Its properties matter together with geometry.

Compare the stated supported USB mode and cable rating rather than deducing speed or charging capability from insulation alone. The jacket and connector housing can be made of different materials.

Dielectric / Insulation — SFP USB Cable

For an optical USB assembly, dielectric insulation can describe its electrical conductors rather than the optical fibre. Power and other electrical paths may remain alongside optical transmission.

Compare which part the material claim covers. Electrical insulation material does not identify the fibre core or prove complete galvanic isolation, and it does not alone establish the link’s supported USB rate.

Dielectric / Insulation — Ethernet Cable

For an Ethernet cable, insulation around each conductor is part of the paired transmission structure. Geometry and dielectric properties together affect the cable’s electrical characteristics.

Compare category and transmission ratings for the complete cable rather than relying on the material name. The conductor insulation, overall jacket and any shield are different layers with different roles.
