Interface Type
The main digital-signal conversion, reclocking, isolation or filtering functions performed by a standalone interface.
Digital interfaces perform different jobs depending on what enters and leaves them. A digital-to-digital converter changes the connection format; a reclocker retimes a signal; an upsampler changes the audio sample rate. Isolation and filtering address different electrical conditions.
Interface Type — Digital Interface
For a digital interface, start with the complete route: USB or network audio may leave through S/PDIF, AES/EBU or I²S for a DAC. A USB-in/USB-out device instead works within the USB link. One unit can perform several documented functions.
Compare supported input and output formats, rates and routing before judging the type label. Reclocking does not necessarily change sample rate, and isolation does not require a new clock. A digital interface does not automatically provide analogue recording or playback; those require ADC or DAC functions that must be specified separately.
