Glossary term

Display Type

Display Type names the technology of a product’s main playback screen. If there are several playback screens, the largest counts.

The listed types are LCD (including TFT and IPS), OLED, vacuum fluorescent display (VFD), E-ink (electronic paper) and LED segment or dot-matrix displays. OLED pixels produce their own light; LCDs usually use a backlight. Display Size is recorded separately.

Explicitly stated “No display” means none; missing information means unknown.

Display Type — Streamer

A streamer’s screen helps you read playback information without reaching for your phone. Check whether the text is readable from your listening position, at your viewing angle and in your room’s lighting. Panel technology alone cannot guarantee this. For a dark room, check brightness adjustment and whether the display can switch off.

“Colour touchscreen” does not identify the panel technology. Power and status lights do not count as a playback display. An empty entry may mean the technology is unspecified, not that the streamer has no screen.

Display Type — CD Transport

On a CD transport, the display helps you follow track number, elapsed or remaining time and playback state where those readouts are supported. Check readability from your seat, brightness adjustment and which information the product actually shows.

Panel technology does not establish CD-Text support, disc compatibility or digital-output formats. A simple display can provide useful playback information; a colour touchscreen does not by itself identify its panel technology.

Display Type — SACD Transport

On an SACD transport, check whether the display clearly identifies the selected disc layer or playback area as well as track and time information. Those readouts can help you confirm the chosen mode on compatible discs.

Display technology does not establish SACD support or whether an output carries DSD, PCM or a particular channel arrangement. Check those functions separately, together with readability and dimming. A displayed format label reports only the information that the device is designed to show.
