Drive Type

Drive Type describes how a turntable motor transfers rotation to the platter. It is separate from the motor’s electrical type and speed-control method.

Belt drive uses a belt around the platter or a sub-platter; thread or string drive uses a thread, string or tape. Direct drive turns the platter on the motor’s axis. Idler or rim drive uses a wheel in contact with the platter. Non-contact magnetic drive transfers rotation across a magnetic gap.

The arrangement affects the parts and maintenance involved. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for replacing belts or other drive components and for handling the platter. None of these labels alone establishes speed accuracy, noise or sound quality.

Describe the supplied configuration. A belt-driven deck with an additional magnetic coupling remains belt-driven; the coupling is a separate feature. Motor placement and electronic speed selection do not identify the drive type.
