Electrostatic Drivers (Per Side)

The number of electrostatic or electret sound drivers fitted to one headphone earpiece.

Electrostatic drivers move a charged diaphragm using an electric field. The count includes the electrostatic-type tweeters used in some hybrid earphones as well as drivers in dedicated electrostatic headphones. Their drive arrangements differ, so technology and connection requirements must be read together.

Electrostatic Drivers (Per Side) — Headphone

For headphones, check whether the counted units are full-range drivers or tweeters within a hybrid design. An earphone described as using two EST tweeters per side has two counted units in each earpiece; its other driver technologies belong in separate counts.

Compare equivalent per-earpiece totals and the documented drive requirements. Dedicated electrostatic headphones may require a matching energizer or amplifier, while hybrid earphones can use an internal drive arrangement. The count alone does not specify that requirement, the usable frequency range or sound quality. Crossover bands and sound bores are not driver counts.
