Planar Magnetic Drivers (Per Side)

The number of planar-magnetic sound drivers fitted to one headphone earpiece.

A planar-magnetic driver uses a thin diaphragm carrying conductors that interact with a magnetic field. This count applies per earpiece and can include a small planar tweeter within a hybrid design. Diaphragm diameter and the number of magnets are separate properties.

Planar Magnetic Drivers (Per Side) — Headphone

In a headphone, a planar driver may reproduce the main audio range or share the work with other driver types. Check the published arrangement so that a small planar tweeter is not mistaken for the headphone’s only sound-producing element. One diaphragm remains one driver even when several magnets act on it.

Compare counts per side, rather than mixing a pair total with an earpiece total. More planar drivers do not automatically mean deeper bass or higher sensitivity. Impedance, sensitivity, fit and measured response are more relevant to matching the amplifier and understanding the completed headphone.
