Form Factor

Digital tape recorder form factor identifies whether the machine is a home deck, a professional or broadcast deck, or a portable unit.

The category describes its intended physical use and installation. It helps distinguish a component for a home system from a rack-oriented machine or a recorder designed to operate while carried.

Form Factor — Digital Tape Recorder

A home deck normally fits into a mains-powered hi-fi system. A professional or broadcast deck is designed for studio, mastering or broadcast work, often with rack mounting. A portable machine is built for use away from a fixed installation and remains portable even when intended for professional field recording.

Compare dimensions, power options, connections and operating features separately. Balanced sockets alone do not turn a home deck into a professional model. The form factor does not identify the tape format, supported recording modes or conversion quality; a compact portable and a rack deck may still use the same recording medium.
