Dual-Well Mechanism

Dual Well indicates whether a cassette deck has two cassette transports.

The two mechanisms may support copying between tapes or successive playback. Their functions need not be identical: one transport may be playback-only while the other can record.

Dual-Well Mechanism — Tape Deck

Check which well records, which playback directions are supported and whether dubbing or relay play is provided. Two cassette compartments alone do not establish simultaneous independent playback or two recording paths.

For copying, distinguish normal-speed and high-speed modes and follow the deck’s tape and recording settings. The feature describes transport count, not the quality of the copy or the condition of an older mechanism. Each transport’s heads, tape path and controls still need to operate correctly for its assigned role.
