Glossary term

Durometer / Hardness

Durometer Hardness describes an elastomer’s resistance to indentation, reported on a specified Shore scale.

The number needs its scale designation. Values from different Shore scales are not directly interchangeable, and hardness is not the same quantity as a foot’s load capacity or its stiffness in an installed assembly.

Durometer / Hardness — Damping Feet

The compliant material’s hardness influences how it deforms, but the foot’s shape, thickness and applied load also affect the result. Compare hardness figures only with the same scale and suitable measurement conditions.

A softer material is not automatically a better isolator for every component. It may compress too far under a load for which it was not designed. Choose the foot’s specified load range and mounting arrangement rather than using the hardness number alone to predict vibration reduction.
