Band Q / Bandwidth

EQ Band Width describes how broad a frequency region an adjustable equalizer band affects.

Bandwidth may be stated in octaves, where one octave spans a doubling of frequency. Some controls instead use Q, a dimensionless measure related to selectivity: higher Q generally means a narrower band. An octave value and a Q value should not be treated as interchangeable numbers.

Band Q / Bandwidth — Equalizer

A narrow band can target a limited frequency region, while a wide band changes a broader part of the tonal balance. The effect also depends on the centre frequency, filter shape and amount of boost or cut. Width alone does not describe the complete adjustment.

Compare the supported range using the same definition and units. Check whether width is adjustable on every band or fixed for some filters. A very narrow setting is not inherently more precise for every task, and aggressive correction based on a single measurement can miss how the response changes with position.
