Boost / Cut Range

Boost / Cut Range is the maximum level increase or reduction available from an equalizer band, expressed in decibels.

The endpoints may be equal in both directions or provide more cut than boost. This is a relative adjustment to the affected frequency region, not an absolute output voltage or the overall gain of the equipment. Keep the positive and negative limits distinct.

Boost / Cut Range — Equalizer

A larger range allows stronger adjustment, but it does not establish that such adjustment is useful or free from side effects. Boost uses signal headroom, and overlapping bands can combine to produce more change than one band’s setting suggests.

Check which filters the range applies to and whether selectable operating modes alter it. Reduce input level where required to avoid clipping during boosts. The range alone does not specify distortion, noise or the maximum clean output. Compare like-for-like settings and judge the combined response rather than treating the largest boost figure as a quality rating.
