External Clock Compatibility
External clock compatibility describes the timing signals a device can receive or generate through its external clock connections.
The signal type and frequency must match the intended clocking arrangement. Word clock, an audio master clock and a 10 MHz reference are different signals, even when their connectors look similar.
Compare input and output direction, supported frequencies, signal level, impedance, waveform and termination requirements. A connector count or a simple external-clock feature flag does not provide these compatibility details. The audio sample rates a device plays are not automatically the reference frequencies its clock input accepts. Keep the internal oscillator specification separate from the conditions for connecting an external timing source.
