Fibre Core / Cladding Diameter

Core and cladding dimensions give the diameters of the light-guiding fibre core and the surrounding optical cladding.

They are commonly stated as a pair in micrometres. The cladding diameter is distinct from the larger protective coating or finished cable jacket.

Fibre Core / Cladding Diameter — SFP Ethernet Cable

For an optical Ethernet link, these dimensions help identify the fibre construction required by the transceiver. They belong with the specified fibre mode and type when matching an installed cable to optical modules.

Compare the two dimensions in their stated order and keep micrometres separate from millimetres. Matching cladding diameter alone does not establish optical compatibility because different core sizes and fibre types can share it. The pair does not describe the connector’s outside diameter or provide a complete maximum-distance rating.
