Flywheel

Whether the turntable includes a separate rotating mass used as a flywheel in its drive system.

A separate flywheel adds rotational inertia to the drive arrangement. This field distinguishes that physical component from the flywheel effect of the main platter’s own mass.

Flywheel — Turntable

For a Turntable, a flywheel may form part of the mechanism that transfers motion from the motor to the platter. Its presence describes the drive architecture rather than a directly comparable measure of playback quality.

Check that the component is actually a distinct fitted flywheel. A heavy platter, ordinary subplatter or general description of rotational energy is insufficient. If a flywheel is offered only as an accessory, distinguish the supplied configuration from the optional one.

Compare the complete drive and measured speed performance. Flywheel mass, placement and coupling affect behaviour. Presence alone does not establish lower wow and flutter, quieter bearings or a particular startup time.
