FM IF Bandwidth Modes
FM IF bandwidth modes are the filter-width settings available in the intermediate-frequency stage of an FM tuner.
The intermediate-frequency filter helps isolate the selected station before audio is recovered. Settings can include wide, narrow, a still narrower option, automatic selection or continuously variable bandwidth.
FM IF Bandwidth Modes — Tuner
A narrower setting can reduce interference from nearby stations. A wider setting gives the wanted FM signal more room through the filter, which can preserve lower distortion and stereo separation when reception is clear. Automatic mode chooses the bandwidth according to reception rather than requiring a fixed manual selection.
Compare the actual available settings and reception conditions. Narrow is not universally the best listening position, and the labels do not state an exact width in kilohertz. A fixed filter offers no selection. The AM-band bandwidth control is a separate feature, even on the same tuner.
