FM Signal-to-Noise Ratio

FM signal-to-noise ratio compares the recovered radio audio level with noise, expressed in decibels.

A larger ratio means less noise relative to the audio under the stated conditions. Mono and stereo can give different results, as can changes in antenna signal strength.

FM Signal-to-Noise Ratio — Tuner

This figure helps describe background quietness during FM reception. Read it with the reception mode, antenna input level and noise weighting. The reference frequency deviation and any selected IF bandwidth also affect the basis of the measurement, so those conditions belong with the number.

Compare like conditions, including whether a figure is a minimum guarantee rather than a typical result. A strong-signal ratio does not establish weak-station sensitivity. A general audio-output or amplifier S/N specification cannot substitute for FM reception S/N, even when both appear on one receiver's specification sheet.
