FM Stereo Separation

FM stereo separation measures how well a tuner keeps the recovered left and right audio channels apart.

It is expressed in decibels: a larger value means less leakage between channels under the stated conditions. Separation can vary with audio frequency and the selected IF bandwidth.

FM Stereo Separation — Tuner

The figure describes the tuner's ability to preserve differences between the broadcast stereo channels. A result at 1 kHz does not describe separation across the whole audio band. A bandwidth setting that improves rejection of nearby stations can also change stereo separation.

Compare figures at the same audio frequency and IF setting, retaining minimum or maximum qualifications. Reception conditions and the broadcast itself also affect the stereo result. Do not substitute amplifier channel separation or a DAB output measurement for this FM reception specification.
