FM Tuning Step
FM tuning step is the frequency increment between successive tuning positions, normally expressed in kilohertz.
The step determines which station frequencies can be selected directly. Some tuners offer several increments or regional settings; continuous analogue tuning has no fixed step. Tuning resolution is separate from the ability to reject another station nearby.
FM Tuning Step — Tuner
A 50 kHz step moves through finer frequency positions than a 100 kHz step. The useful choice depends on the broadcast frequencies you need to reach and the tuner's tuning grid. A smaller increment gives more adjustment positions, but it does not automatically improve sound quality.
Compare the settings available on the actual regional version, including any user-selectable alternatives. Check the FM tuning range separately: a suitable step does not ensure that every required frequency is covered. Do not substitute an AM tuning step, or assume that a digital frequency display proves a particular tuning increment.
