Application

Headphone application identifies the specialised professional or gaming roles for which the manufacturer designs and markets the headphones.

The roles include studio monitoring, gaming, DJ use and stage monitoring. They describe intended work rather than a quality ranking. Headphones for general listening need no specialised application label, and a product can serve more than one stated role.

Application — Headphone

The application helps identify the job the headphones are meant to support. Studio work can involve recording, mixing or mastering; stage monitoring concerns performers hearing a live monitor mix. Gaming and DJ designs address different working situations, so a shared application label does not imply identical features.

Compare the requirements of your use, including fit, isolation, connection and microphone provision where relevant. Rotating earcups alone do not establish DJ intent, and the words 'reference' or 'professional' do not prove studio suitability. Likewise, a low-latency mode on general headphones does not make them a gaming headset.
