3.5 mm Headphone Output

This field counts 3.5 mm single-ended headphone output sockets.

The count describes physical connections rather than audio channels. Input sockets, line outputs and plugs supplied on headphone cables are separate items.

3.5 mm Headphone Output — Headphone Amp

On a headphone amplifier, a 3.5 mm output provides the specified single-ended connection for compatible headphones and cables. A stereo headphone connection carries left and right channels through one socket.

Compare the socket count with the connection your headphones require and check the power rating for that output separately. A 3.5 mm line input may look similar but receives a signal rather than driving headphones. Several headphone sockets do not necessarily have independent volume controls.

3.5 mm Headphone Output — Digital Audio Player

On a portable player, the 3.5 mm headphone socket connects headphones to the built-in amplifier’s single-ended output. Its power rating can differ from a separate balanced output on the same player.

Compare the required plug and wiring with the actual headphone cable. Socket size alone does not describe output power, and a shared headphone/line socket may need the correct operating mode selected. Do not count a supplied plug adaptor as another output on the player or assume several sockets can be used simultaneously.
