Transducer Type

Transducer Type identifies the principle a headphone uses to turn an electrical signal into sound.

Dynamic drivers move a diaphragm with a voice coil. Planar magnetic drivers move a thin diaphragm using conductors in a magnetic field. Electrostatic drivers use an electric field. Balanced-armature drivers use a small moving armature; bone-conduction designs transmit vibration through contact with the head. Hybrid earpieces combine more than one principle.

Transducer Type — Headphone

The type helps explain the construction and, in some cases, the required driving equipment. Electrostatic headphones commonly need a compatible energiser or dedicated amplifier. Check the specific headphone’s connection and power requirements before choosing equipment.

The label does not state driver size, driver count, sensitivity or sound quality. A hybrid designation describes the combination within an earpiece, not merely different materials. Diaphragm materials, magnet grades and open-back or closed-back construction are separate details; none should be substituted for the transducer principle.
