I2S Input

The number of external I2S digital-audio inputs on a DAC. “1 × I2S (HDMI)” means one input.

I2S carries audio data on a separate line from its timing signals. Originally designed to link chips, it also connects some transports and streamers to DACs. The bus is standardized, but external connector pin assignments are not universal.

I2S Input — DAC

An HDMI-shaped I2S input does not accept ordinary HDMI audio or TV ARC/eARC. An RJ45 version is not an Ethernet network connection.

Before connecting, check both manufacturers’ documentation for matching pin assignments (which signal uses each contact), clock requirements, and supported PCM/DSD formats and rates. If compatibility is unconfirmed, do not connect: mismatched pinouts can produce loud noise. Input count tells you how many connections are available, not whether one DAC sounds better.
