Inter-Shelf Clearance

Inter-Shelf Clearance is the usable vertical gap between one rack shelf and the structure above it.

This gap determines the height available for a component, including its feet and protruding controls. It differs from shelf-to-shelf spacing measured between matching surfaces, because the upper shelf’s thickness or support structure can reduce the usable opening.

Inter-Shelf Clearance — Rack

Compare the available gap with the component’s full height and its required ventilation clearance. Some equipment also needs room above for a lid, disc mechanism or other moving part. A close physical fit can still leave too little space for operation or cooling.

Check whether the stated clearance applies to every level or only a particular configuration. Adjustable shelves can have different gaps, and a brace may create a lower point within an otherwise open space. Measure the actual obstruction where the component will sit; the rack’s overall height alone does not establish the clearance on any individual shelf.
