Level Meter Segments

Level meter segments is the number of illuminated steps in each channel of a bar-style audio level meter.

More segments can provide finer subdivisions, but the scale and meter response determine what those subdivisions mean. The count is per channel: two twelve-segment bars provide twelve segments per channel, rather than twenty-four for either channel.

Level Meter Segments — Cassette Deck

A cassette deck's bar meters help set recording level and observe differences between the channels. Segment count describes the display's divisions, not its accuracy or the amount of headroom available on tape. The spacing around the reference may be more useful than the total count.

Compare the scale markings, peak or averaging behaviour and any peak-hold function alongside the number of segments. More lights do not automatically reveal brief overloads if the response is slow. A needle meter has no segments, and the combined total across left and right bars should not be mistaken for each channel's resolution.
