Glossary term

Loading Type

The mechanism used to insert and remove discs, such as a tray, top-loading compartment, slot or multi-disc changer.

Loading type describes physical access to the disc. It is separate from the drive model, supported disc formats and the mechanism’s measured reading performance.

Loading Type — CD Transport

On a CD Transport, loading type affects how you handle discs and how much clearance the unit needs. A top loader needs access above it, while a front tray needs room to extend outward.

A slot loader draws a disc through a slot. A changer holds several discs and selects between them, even if its loading mechanism also includes a tray. Read the product’s stated mechanism rather than inferring it from the transport category.

Compare the arrangement with shelf access and your listening habits. Loading type alone does not establish supported recordable formats, better error correction or a sonic advantage over another mechanism.

Loading Type — SACD Transport

On an SACD Transport, loading type describes access to the disc rather than which SACD areas the unit can play. A top-loading design, front tray and slot loader can impose different clearance and handling requirements.

Read the physical mechanism as specified. If the transport holds and selects among several discs, a changer description takes precedence over its tray appearance. Follow any instructions for a supplied puck, lid or other retention arrangement.

Compare the design with available shelf space and access. A loading mechanism does not establish multichannel SACD output, hybrid-disc handling details or superior sound; supported playback formats and outputs remain separate checks.
