Main Bearing Type
The mechanical arrangement that supports and guides the turntable’s main platter rotation.
The main bearing belongs to the platter assembly, not the tonearm. Bearing type describes its operating arrangement; the materials used for the spindle, sleeve or contact surfaces are separate details.
Main Bearing Type — Turntable
For a Turntable, the main bearing carries the rotating assembly while allowing the platter to turn. Conventional and inverted layouts describe geometry, while air, magnetic or hydrodynamic arrangements describe particular supporting or operating principles.
Read the actual construction rather than identifying a type from a material name. A ceramic component does not by itself establish an inverted or magnetic bearing. When a design combines features, retain the manufacturer’s stated operating arrangement instead of treating the labels as unrelated alternatives.
Compare installation and maintenance requirements. Bearing type alone does not establish friction, noise or service life. Magnetic support also differs from magnetic drive coupling: supporting the platter and transmitting rotation are separate functions.
