Mains Frequency Dependence

Whether correct turntable speed depends on the frequency of the mains electricity supply.

Mains frequency is commonly 50 or 60 Hz and is separate from supply voltage. A power supply accepting either frequency does not by itself prove that the platter maintains the correct speed on both.

Mains Frequency Dependence — Turntable

For a Turntable, mains-frequency dependence matters when choosing a regional version or moving the deck between regions. A mains-synchronous drive can depend on supply frequency, while other arrangements generate or regulate the motor drive separately.

Read the stated speed compatibility and any required setting or hardware change. A specification may identify 50 Hz only, 60 Hz only, a selectable arrangement or frequency-independent speed. The rating on an external power supply is not enough to establish which applies.

Check the complete arrangement for the intended location. Frequency-independent speed still requires compatible voltage. Frequency dependence does not imply poor playback; it identifies a condition needed for correct operation.
