Glossary term

Maximum Output Level / Voltage

Maximum output voltage is the largest audio signal an output delivers before its stated clipping or distortion limit.

Load, connection and voltage convention matter. RMS, peak and peak-to-peak figures cannot be compared as if they were the same measurement.

Maximum Output Level / Voltage — Optical Equalizer

For an optical-cartridge equalizer, this rating describes the maximum audio output from the optical-cartridge signal path. RCA and XLR connections can have separate limits.

Compare the same output connector and load with the following component’s input tolerance. Keep a rated reference output separate from the clipping ceiling, and preserve the optical-input scope on a unit that also accepts other cartridge types.

Maximum Output Level / Voltage — Headphone Amp

For a headphone amplifier, maximum voltage swing helps describe its ability to drive a specified load. An electrostatic amplifier can state audio swing in peak-to-peak volts.

Compare the load and voltage convention, and keep audio swing separate from the DC electrostatic bias supply. A high unloaded voltage does not establish the same capability into every headphone, since output-current limits also matter.

Maximum Output Level / Voltage — Equalizer

For an equalizer, the maximum output level sets a limit on the signal passed to the following component. Available headroom can depend on load and the selected processing settings.

Compare the output connection, load and distortion criterion with the downstream input. A nominal line level is not the maximum, and a headroom figure in decibels needs its reference before it can be related to voltage.

Maximum Output Level / Voltage — Crossover

For an active crossover, maximum output voltage describes the level available to drive the following amplifier inputs. Different outputs or settings can have their own conditions.

Compare the load and output type with the amplifier’s sensitivity and input limit. Keep rated level and clipping ceiling distinct; maximum voltage does not describe loudspeaker power because the crossover normally feeds an amplifier.
