MiniDisc Formats

MiniDisc formats identifies the recording and transfer families a MiniDisc device supports, including any playback-only limitations.

Standard MD, MDLP and Hi-MD provide different recording modes and capacities. NetMD identifies computer-to-disc USB transfer rather than a separate acoustic quality grade. Format support must be read together with whether the device records, plays or transfers that material.

MiniDisc Formats — MiniDisc

Standard MD covers the original stereo and mono modes. MDLP adds longer LP2 and LP4 modes, while Hi-MD supports its own compressed modes and linear PCM. NetMD provides a USB transfer route. These labels help establish whether a disc or transfer workflow will work with the equipment.

Compare the modes and the recording-versus-playback qualification. A machine may play a format it cannot record. ATRAC generation labels describe encoding or decoding technology, not an additional disc format. A 74- or 80-minute disc label describes capacity, and a supported computer file type alone does not establish MiniDisc format compatibility.
