Medium
Network cable medium identifies whether an Ethernet connection uses electrical conductors, multimode optical fibre or single-mode optical fibre.
Copper network cables carry electrical signals; optical fibres carry light. The medium must suit the ports or optical transceivers at both ends, as well as the required link distance and network standard.
Medium — Network Cable
Copper twisted-pair cabling commonly connects RJ45 Ethernet ports. Multimode and single-mode fibre use different optical arrangements and must match the transceiver's fibre requirements. The medium helps establish the equipment and termination needed for the link, rather than describing the music format being carried.
Compare fibre type, transceiver compatibility, connector and supported distance together. An LC plug alone does not identify single-mode or multimode fibre, and an SFP-ended assembly is not necessarily optical: copper assemblies also exist. An unspecified fibre type remains uncertain. Medium alone does not establish link speed or improve the resolution of the audio files sent over the network.
