Noise Reduction System

Noise Reduction System identifies the tape noise-reduction encoding and decoding systems built into a reel-to-reel machine.

These systems alter the signal during recording and apply complementary processing during playback to reduce audible tape noise. The specific system and variant matter; a generic low-noise claim is not evidence that an encoder or decoder is included.

Noise Reduction System — Reel-to-Reel

Play an encoded tape with the matching supported decoding mode. The wrong setting can change tonal balance or dynamics rather than simply leaving more hiss. Check whether the machine supports recording, playback or both, and whether controls apply independently to channels.

Keep the system name separate from the signal-to-noise ratio, which is a measured figure under stated conditions. External accessories are not built-in support. Noise reduction also does not replace correct tape speed, equalization, head alignment or suitable recording calibration.
